  1. Hi,
Sorry if you already dealt with this in later episodes of other fora – I am a few weeks behind in my podcast playlist – but you mentioned that Twilight appeared to be the first time the vampire lore was changed from the classic/Dracula type, and I suppose that is true for hugely popular fiction that infiltrates our general pop culture, but I just had to mention a book series I read from the mid-90’s by Steven Spruill. I am not sure if the trilogy as a whole has a name, but it started with “Rulers of Darkness”. I suspect maybe it was not ‘great literature’, but I do remember being delighted with the way the author gave a scientific basis for vampires, making them humans with a recessive gene that expresses itself at around puberty, turning them into what we call vampires unless they don’t drink blood at that point and die of what is misdiagnosed as leukaemia. Those vampires were daywalkers and had no restrictions like mirrors and invitations.

    Best regards, Miisa

Thanks so much for the info! I’ll definitely look into it. I wasn’t familiar with this author, but it sounds pretty awesome.
