I was on holiday this week so I only got the chance to watch one film again. Plus some episodes of DS9 but that’s allowed.

Byzantium

I’d be really interested in figuring out when we went from traditional Dracula or Anne Rice style of vampire stories into the post-Buffy world where these stories are much more about how vampires live day to day in the modern era, or are a different take on the mythology than normal. Byzantium does some very interesting things combining that Anne Rice tradition with some modern vampire sensibilities, and then layering in elements of a quieter film about an unusual mother-daughter relationship. But for all that it was only okay. There’s not much that stood out through the film, and the performances of the different characters vary wildly. An interesting watch for fans of vampire films only I think.
