MMM October 2019

This is the text version of my Patreon exclusive podcast where I talk about the best films I watch each month. If you’d like to get access and help to support the network you can do so at patreon.com/eloquentgushing.

To The Bone

Despite a slightly lacklustre ending I think this film did a lot of the story very well. Another good Keanu performance from his ‘I’ll do anything’ period, alongside some strong writing of an interesting set of characters.

The Intervention

This isn’t a follow up to But I’m A Cheerleader, but at the same time, Clea DuVall and Natasha Lyonne as a couple really makes it feel that way. A really funny story, some great moments, plus a whole film of ‘hey it’s that person’!

Girlhood

Showing a film of racial, gender, and class issues in the outside of Paris really hammers home that this could be any major city. It’s full of strong performances, and the director measures the really delightful moments with some that are incredibly difficult to watch.

This Film Is Not Yet Rated

I feel like part of this documentary is missing an opportunity to really discuss the differences in film rating, especially comparing it to international institutions. The focus on the investigation is okay, especially exposing how much secrecy and misinformation there is about the MPAA. But it really needs a follow up.

Advantageous

This film is gorgeous, especially on the budget they had, and has some really good sci-fi contemplation. The ending is not quite what I expected, and perhaps could have taken a wider view in the central procedure rather than how it affected one person. However I really enjoyed the central story and it’s stayed with me since.

Star Trek VI The Undiscovered Country

The best Star Trek movie, in my opinion. It’s so rewatchable, and I’m looking forward to returning to it after we covered it for PCD with Jarrah Hodge.

The Congress

The first film I put forward and shown at the society, very mixed responses but I still think the concepts it covers, and the way it does so, makes up for anything you might perceive as a problem.

See You Yesterday

Another one we’ve covered for PCD, much more surprising than I expected it to be. A very deep story, great performances, and a very good take on time travel from a new perspective. Recommended.
