To go along with the tartiflette, I commissioned Matthew to bring home a nice dry French white wine. He produced this Montagny from Chatel Buis which is discounted at Waitrose at the moment.

Buying French wine tends to scare me a little as I can never tell what I am going to get. There is something comforting about buying new world wines which are very overt about what grape is in the wine.
Looking at the Waitrose page this wine is described both as a white Burgundy (which would have meant very little to me) and also as an unoaked chardonnay (which I would have felt comfortable buying).
It was delicious so maybe the moral of the story is that I should send Matthew out to buy me wine more often!
I have also learned from the wonders of google that white Burgundy is pretty much always made from the chardonnay grape. But also that it is considered the crème de la crème of Chardonnay wines. I also learned that Chablis is a type of white burgundy … who knew!?
I must admit that having enjoyed this bottle so much I am interested to try more. Perhaps I will stop going for a New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc every time I am ordering. Perhaps…
This was a good article for reading more about white burgundy if you are interested.
