I might be the only one making comments here, but here goes!
Recommendation for a fun, different rom-com that I absolutely love (and I believe it’s on YouTube) is “Who Am I This Time?” It was broadcast on PBS in 1980, was directed by Jonathan Demme based on a Vonnegut short story, and stars Susan Sarandon and Christopher Walken (yes, Walken as a rom-com lead!). It is a brilliant homage to theater geeks and small-town acting troupes, and shows how acting can bring people out of their shells and draw them into a tight-knit community.
Walken is a hardware store clerk who is nearly pathologically shy IRL. But put him on a stage, he becomes the character he is portraying. This confuses Sarandon, a traveling phone company worker who is convinced to audition for Stella in Streetcar Named Desire, and who falls for Walken’s Stanley Kowalski, even though everyone tells her that he isn’t Stanley offstage. Their wooing, Sarandom’s blooming confidence, and Walken’s awkward interactions with her are so charming. It is my favorite romantic comedy of all time, even though very few people are familiar with it.
That sounds delightful! And Walken in a rom com? I’m pretty much sold! Thank you SO much for the suggestion!
