Artemis by Andy Weir

Dear Andy Weir,

You set the bar very, very high with The Martian. That was one of my most talked about books of 2012, and I couldn’t wait to see what you would do next.

And Artemis did not disappoint.

I admit, I was a bit worried when I found out that Rosario Dawson was narrating the audio. Why would you need someone so famous unless the book couldn’t stand on its own merit? But I was wrong. Artemis was interesting, intriguing, thrilling, and just flat out engaging. I fell in love with Jazz Bashara from the beginning, and I loved hearing her story. Plus, this new (to me) genre of realistic sci-fi has me itching for more.

And I kind of want to live on the moon now.

My only question is – when will we get this movie? And can Rosario play Jazz, because that would just be the ultimate.

I finally jumped in on The Expanse novels and they are similar in style. Super thoughtful about how life would be and how culture changes once we leave Earth. Very real and practical science fiction, but with a bit of alien stuff. The narrator (Jefferson Mays) 100% makes this series though. I’m sure the books are lovely, but the voice adds so much I can’t imagine reading them. Seven books so far, 10-20 hours each, with an 8th on the way. I uh… finished it in about two months.

Saturn Run is another, 18 hours (only one book), and it’s a literal space race to Saturn. Maybe 20 years in the future?

I wasn’t impressed by the tv show for The Expanse, so it never occurred to me to give the novels a try. I may do that! Thanks! (One can never have enough audio books)
